Statue of Roland

Roland was the name of a young knight, who helped supporting his emperor Karl The Great while fighting against the Saracens, finally dying an heroic death. His name acts as a symbol for city rights and liberty - especially in the old trading towns, which accumulated power and wealth. In a town full of history like Bremen, for more than 600 years a lithic Roland is seen as a warrantor for free market economy and commercial independance, deliberately and proud. We carry the Roland in our name in order to document our commitment to Bremen as a location and to free world trade.
